This article scrutinizes the provenance of one of the great masterpieces of modern art, 'The Guitar Player' (1914) by Georges Braque, to uncover its life story: the narrative arc of a life peculiarly evocative of the terrible twentieth century. The provenance of a work of art is a kind of potted biography, and a proof of authenticity. These notions also find expression in politics. Prime ministers and presidents ransack their own biographies to craft a mythic arc. Authenticity is the Holy Grail. Authenticity, however, is not what it seems.
