  • An introduction to a special issue on, "the Role of Information Technology (IT) in Building & Sustaining the Relational Base of Communities," traces the growth in popularity of both the concept of communities & ideas about how to use technology to support them. Most of the literature on communities & IT fails to consider the fundamental dynamics that link communities & technologies. The articles in this special issue make up for that lack by addressing how people relate to each other, how shared practices emerge, how communities evolve, & why these communities do/do not use technologies. A brief synopsis of each article is followed by a discussion of the concept of "social capital" as a "necessary ingredient that binds communities over time." Attention is given to the connection between social capital & knowledge management; the potential for IT to foster social capital; the need for sociotechnical requirement analysis to help people stay connected to IT systems; & the role of IT in face-to-face environments as well as online communities. 78 References.
