  • In recent years the investigation of early mother-child conversations has demonstrated that mothers differ in their ways of organizing events and actions with their children. Two different styles have been identified. Some mothers show an elaborative or narrative style; they hold long, detailed conversations, embedding the events or actions in a broader experiential context. Other mothers show a paradigmatic, repetitive or low-elaborative style; they hold short conversations in which they only focus on some aspects of the events or actions, asking the same questions over and over. Very recently these stylistic differences were linked to the gender of the child, revealing that mothers are more elaborative with daughters than with sons. The present study examines maternal modes of organizing an imminent emotional event, a brief separation from the child. Twenty-five mother-child dyads were videotaped at four time points when the children were 17, 23, 30 and 36 months of age. Consistent with the research on mothers' styles of reminiscing with their children and commenting on ongoing events and actions, the mothers' displayed two different ways of structuring the future event, and these different modes could be related statistically to the gender of the child. Two additional exploratory case studies investigated how the mother directs the child's mental processes by using augments of speech actions, intonation contours and pauses.
