  • An analysis is presented of some aspects of the Amer t community; this is a revised version of a paper, 'Academics are Professors of What?' read at the Notre Dame meeting of the Ohio Valley Sociol'al Society in Apr 1967, A list of 1-7s founded before 1800 shows that not all of them have achieved nat' t eminence. Of 1, 957 Coll's & U's in 1961, 509 were under private control; 486 under Protestant church control; 2,80 under Catholic church control; 5 under -Jewish control; 291 were controlled by local goo's; 374 by state goo's & 12 by the federal gov. The 'Coll & I' community involved, in 196:3, was 150,733 lull-time resident teachers in 931 instit's with 3, 235, 2u8 students. the changing roles of the Coll & the professor are defined in 10 historical stages derived from 373 listed Amer novels. Another list gives the amount of res money per faculty member at 155 selected Sch's; it ranges from 5119, 508. 71 at the Illinois instil of Technology to 8379. 32 at Miami U in Ohio. It is concluded that the academic image fhictuates between disenchantement & admiration. I. Langnas.
