The history of naval tactics deserves revival but it needs to be remembered that the genre developed as a branch of geometry, and tactics as idea are different to tactics in reality: the line of battle was straight - in theory - but any manoeuvre tended to disorganise. This article looks at why tactics in theory were so remote from the practical business of handling fleets in action and considers the relevance of developments in signalling (again, in reality, orders in battle had to be passed by word of mouth) and styles of commanding.
