A trend common to all highly industrialized societies is rising worker productivity and increasing real wages. As time becomes more valuable, the typical individual shifts from those non-work activities that are time intensive to those that employ more goods. Since goods are generally labor saving, the exercise received by the individual normally falls. Pure leisure and personal maintenance also are reduced. All of these changes reduce the health stock of the individual. Medical care, being relatively expensive, is used more intensely. This possibly can counteract the harmful effects of goods use and reduced exercise and maintenance. Recent studies have shown that, in fact, health is no longer positively correlated with income in the most developed countries. It is suggested that lower health is consciously chosen and that this choice can be modified by making those recreational activities that are health inducing more readily available.
