Of all the events of the Revolutionary War, none contained ingredients more poignant and more suitable to the modes of expression favored in the early nineteenth century than the murder of Jane McCrea. The young victim of this actual Indian massacre embodied the image of the pathetic heroine after Samuel Richardson's popular literary tradition. Like Clarissa Harlowe, she personified good and innocence versus evil and cruelty.
