The paper investigates low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind turbine system by proposing a control methodol-ogy. Model predictive control strategy is employed to deal with the nonlinear relationship between the generator rotor speed and the DC-link voltage in the turbine back-to-back converter. The LVRT capability of the wind turbine is enhanced when the machine-side converter controls the DC-link voltage and a lower voltage is compensated by the kinetic energy stored in the wind turbine's inertia. The proposed methodology is applied on a detailed PMSG wind turbine model. Then, the closed-loop response performance of the design based on the proposed control strategy is compared to that of a conventional PI control design via simulation tests on the 2 MW PMSG wind turbine model.
