  • In this paper, an algorithm for thinning a linear antenna array is presented. The algorithm is aimed to minimize maximum side lobe level while maintaining minimal loss of initial half-power beamwidth. As a result, the algorithm determines a combination of active and inactive array elements for a required thinning coefficient. An effect of mutation and population size is discussed. The proximity of obtained solution to an optimal one is evaluated for multiple array sizes. The suggested algorithm allows to achieve maximum side lobe level of thinned array, it is lower than one of global optimum solution up to -1.5 dB on average. The classification of antenna array thinning methods is introduced. Comparison results for different thinning methods are provided. Two methods have an obvious advantage above the others. An emphasis is made on the research of thinned antenna array characteristics with various amplitude tapers in comparison with the characteristics of full array.
