• The article responds to the new PocketLab initiative, which under the motto "Join educators worldwide in bringing hands on science to the classroom" promotes vocational education, in which the student is not only an experimenter, but also the creator of the analysed technical device. It shows that the basic idea of this approach, in which the active participation of the student in the construction of the device is also a guarantee of his deeper relationship to the solved problems, is far from new. In recent decades, however, the overall framework of its application has changed significantly, which has made it possible to use its positives even in the current pandemic period, which severely limits the possibilities of cooperation between the student and his mentor (mentors) in university labs.
