Large array systems are more and more often chosen for multiple applications. This includes AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) which brings the benefit of steering electronically the transmitted radio-wave beam through constructive and destructive interference between the different channel output - for a transmitter - or input - for a receiver. Another example is MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems. Multiple channels are used to improve the transmission capability as well as mitigate and compensate noise effect in the transmission medium. These kinds of system can reach up to 100s of channels and thus are interested into products that are easy enough to implement on a large scale. They also require synchronization between channels to be able to control the steering for AESA system or be able to transmit the data correctly for MIMO systems. In parallel to the large array systems, direct conversion is progressively adopted in order to bring new SDR (Software Defined Radio) capabilities to the system, translating into flexibility at the application level. In such kind of systems, the driving characteristic is the data converter input - for ADC (Analog to Digital Convert) - and output - for DAC (Digital to Analog Convert) bandwidth. This paper will offer an overview of AESA and MIMO systems associated with direct conversion and their benefits at application level. It will then present and explain a few features that are essential for these types of application at the data converter level. It will use the example of the EV12AD500 a dual-channel 1.5GSps 12 bits ADC by Teledyne e2v offering direct conversion capabilities up to the C-band. It will cover in particular serial interfaces with the ESIstream (Efficient Serial Interface) protocol and an innovative multi-component synchronization method making possible and easier the development of such complex system, as well as present performance result to demonstrate the C-band direct conversion capabilities.
