• Distance relay offers protection of transmission line over a range of distance. Settings of a distance relay can be improved by obtaining information about fault resistance of the transmission line. Accurate estimation of fault resistance helps in efficient operation of the relay in the transmission line. Fault resistance can be estimated by analyzing the fault files at the substations. COMTRADE fault files provide data for the transient from the distance relay located at the substations. Fault resistance was determined for transmission line of 220 kV lines. Simulation was done in PSACD model interfaced with MATLAB.
