In the present paper, a novel multi-criterion approach has been proposed for assessing the overall health condition of the transformer oil. Twenty five transformer oil samples collected from Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board, India were used as data samples for testing and validating the proposed technique. Five effective dissolved gases in oil samples namely hydrogen, methane, acetylene, ethylene and ethane are considered as five attributes for the analysis. The effect and importance of all dissolved gases on transformers oil health have been established with the numerically computed ranges of the possible conditions. It has been found from the proposed method that the overall outcome of the evaluation depends upon all considered attributes and avoids the shortcomings of normal dissolved gas analysis approaches. Subsequently, the proposed technique suggests the type of action to be initiated for better performance of the transformers thereby resulting in its life extension.
