In order to reduce the energy consumption of communication, we consider a system level model for all the components in the radio frequency (RF) part and the baseband part in low power wireless personal area networks (WPAN). In this paper, we present the power consumption model as a function of bandwidth. Using this proposed model, we discuss the total energy consumption in terms of both bandwidth and transmission time, which has a tradeoff relationship for a given data rate. Thereby, we provide an intuitive system level methodology for low energy consumption in WPAN. By increasing bandwidth and decreasing transmission time, we can reduce more energy consumption, when the amount of data to transmit is fixed.
