Water production is simply a function of precipitation and evapotranspiration (ET). It is essential to quantify ET and/or its components in regional scale for water resources assessments or functional forest plans. Several models that combine empirical equations, field measurements and remote sensing data have been tested and proposed to achieve this. One of the major parameters in ET estimatons is the leaf area index (LAI). LAI is a key parameter to identify the water consumption of forest stands and thus ET. It is however quite variable in temporal and spatial scales. In this study we present the results of a 2 years study that aims to identify the temporal variations in LAI for deciduous and coniferous forests in Marmara region of Turkey. Eight permanent plots have been established under different forest types and LAI measurements have been done on a weekly basis. The annual average LAI value for deciduous stands were 1.61 m 2 /m 2 , slightly lower than coniferous stands (1.39 m 2 /m 2 ). However, rainy season LAI value for deciduous stands were lower than coniferous stands.
