An analytical method is described for determining the switched reluctance motor (SRM) terminal inductance, flux linkages, and coenergy change per phase at any position of the rotor from the geometrical dimensions of the motor and core material characteristics. The effects of both local and bulk saturation are included at all excitation levels and rotor positions. It is shown that the phase inductance, even in the fully unaligned rotor position, is a function of the excitation current and not constant. Simulation and measured results for a prototype SRM whose details are given are shown to be in good agreement. Compared to an earlier method for predicting maximum and minimum inductances, the proposed method represents a significant improvement in the prediction of the minimum inductance and is extended to cover all positions of the rotor.< >
