With Bangladesh's population reaching 165 million and the country rapidly advancing in industrialization and urban growth, there's a concurrent surge in urban energy demands and waste production. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), covering 196.23 km 2 and housing 6.10 million people, generates approximately 4220 tons of waste daily, with around 2774 tons/day disposed of in Amin Bazar Landfill. Despite 80% waste collection, around 349 tons/day are recovered by recyclers, mostly organic matter constituting 72%, with a 62.76% moisture content ending up at Amin Bazar Landfill. Waste-to-energy incineration faces challenges due to the lower heating value (LHV) of municipal solid waste (MSW). This paper aims to assess Dhaka North City Corporation's MSW characteristics, focusing on LHV and its fluctuations. The LHV of MSW reaching Amin Bazar Landfill is approximately 2.753 MJ/kg, contrasting with an LHV of 5.64 - 6.94 MJ/kg when factoring in the recycled fraction. This discrepancy results from recyclers extracting high-heat value waste like plastics, paper, textiles, and metals. Sadly, this process is often overlooked by authorities in their planning. Informal resource recovery in Dhaka significantly alters waste characteristics at final disposal or conversion points, complicating the situation. Decision-makers mistakenly base waste conversion plans solely on generation rates, neglecting the impact of informal resource recovery on waste characteristics reaching Government-run Municipal Receiving Stations and Landfills. Hence, proposing a 3000 tons/day incinerator to produce 42.5 MW of electricity raises questions about feasibility due the low LHV of MSW. This study scrutinizes the viability of waste-to-energy conversion from municipal solid waste in Dhaka North City Corporation through incineration, aiming to shed light on this complex issue.
