Food security is under risk due to food waste, which also has negative economic and environmental effects. Food waste has been linked mostly to consumer consumption. This study, therefore, concentrates on the effects of both positive and negative impact on food waste. This study also discovered the moderating effect of social media use on food waste. Four hypotheses were investigated using the affective events theory. A self-administered online survey was given out to 396 respondents. According to the research results, negative affect is related to food waste. The use of social media has a moderating effect on both the positive and negative affect and food waste. The outcomes of this study enhance our knowledge of food waste from the perspective of customer behavior. The findings are essential for solving Malaysia's large food waste issue and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
