  • Relativistic magnetron (RM) is well known as a high efficiency, compact, tunable and robust high-power microwave source. It is expected to have applications in various fields such as pulsed radar, plasma heating, and particle acceleration. Institute of Applied Electronics (IAE) has investigated RM for several years including RM with diffraction output (MDO), RM with all cavity axial extraction(ACAE), multi-antenna extraction (MAE) RM, rectangular vane-type eight-cavity (R8) MDO and axial tuning RM. The performance of RM advances significantly in high efficiency, minimization, light weight, and wide band tuning in IAE. Microwave power of more than 2 GW had been radiated at L-band by both MDO and ACAE RM with inducing magnetic field of less than 0.4 T, corresponding to an efficiency of more than 30%. Microwave power of 1 GW had been radiated at S-band by R8 MDO with inducing magnetic field of less than 0.5 T, corresponding to an efficiency of more than 50%. For long term operation of RM, MDO had achieve sequent radiation for about an hour in 10 Hz repetitive rate. For permanent magnet packaged ACAE RM whose whole weight is only about 94kg, microwave power of more than 1.5GW have been detected with repetitive rate of 30Hz. For tunable RM, axial tuning RM with high efficiency had been presented including axial tuning MAE and ACAE RM. Tuning range of more than 30% had been realized for both of these two types of tubes in gigawatt level power.
