Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • This chapter provides a broad overview of the major findings in the neuroscience of navigation to date. It focuses on two issues: how specialized spatial cells located throughout the brain represent an organism's location in and movement through an environment and the roles of different brain areas and neural networks involved in accomplishing navigational tasks. Much of early neuroscience research has been guided by the principle of localization of function in which particular mental processes or representations are linked to specific brain areas. In the study of navigation, this led to a strong focus on the identification of the neural systems underlying egocentric representations and those responsible for allo‐centric representations. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the limitations of the work conducted to date and the challenges for the field in understanding how the brain accomplishes large‐scale navigation in natural environments.
