• 5G can provide significantly higher data bandwidth and low‐latency communications that will not only accommodate the increased demand for high‐resolution video over mobile networks but also allow for the consumption of more immersive video modalities such as 360º video. Sophisticated video compression algorithms are required in order to take advantage of the increased bandwidth available in modern 5G networks. The state‐of‐the‐art video compression algorithms are able to support high‐resolution video streams at low bit rates and will be the core components of 5G video‐over‐mobile services. The increased bandwidth capacity and decreased latency of 5G networks will allow access to complex immersive audio‐visual experiences over mobile networks. The availability of commercial‐grade head‐mounted displays and support from mobile phone/tablet devices has created a developing market and a massive consumer audience for virtual reality, augmented reality, and 360º video content over mobile networks.
