Daily atmospheric dimethylsulfide (DMS) measurements were made for two years at Amsterdam Island, a remote marine site in the southern Indian Ocean. Seasonal variations were noted for DMS both in the atmosphere and on the sea surface. Monthly averages of DMS levels in the surface coastal seawater and in the atmosphere were in the 0.3-2.0 nmol/l and 1.4-11.3 nmol/m super( 3) ranges, respectively; the highest values were recorded in summer. The monthly variation of sea-to-air flux of DMS from the southern Indian Ocean is in the 0.7-4.4 mu mol/m super(2) /d range. A factor of 2.3 was documented between summer and winter, with mean DMS fluxes of 3.0 and 1.3 mu mol/m super(2) /d, respectively.
