• Autier et al respond to Marianne Berwick's commentary, "A Sunbed Epidemic?" They indicate that the key aspect in their study, however, was to establish whether the considerable usage of indoor tanning that took place after 1985 was likely to have played an important role in the melanoma epidemic observed in Iceland after 1992, in young men and women, and particularly for melanoma arising on the trunk. The increase in skin cancer awareness among dermatologists and the public in recent years may have contributed to the increase in reported melanoma cases, but this can hardly explain the rapid increase of melanoma incidence on the trunk observed for women. This anatomic site and gender specificity is more than likely to be related to sunbed use.
