- Quasi-experimental designs (QEDs) are a subset of research designs intended to test causal hypotheses about the effect of manipulable causes, generally policies, programs, and treatments, when randomized controlled trials are not feasible. This article provides a summary of efforts to assess the validity of QEDs to provide unbiased causal inference as well as an overview of the most prevalent types of QEDs used in practice, including regression discontinuity designs, comparative interrupted time series, and nonequivalent comparison group designs.
