We review the strengths and limitations of religious studies, medical anthropological, biomedical, and public health approaches to the multidimensional relationship of religion, healing, and health. Considering ‘healthworlds’ involves acknowledging the multiple ways that people express faith, including explanatory models, patterns of practice, and criteria for efficacy that shape strategies for maintaining health, diagnosing disease, and managing illness. We commend a model of religious health assets that elucidates tangible and intangible resources of religious communities that have direct and indirect public health effects. The challenge remains to integrate models and practices of public health with context-specific, complex, religiously informed healthworlds.
