  • Julius Caesar Scaliger was author of the De causis linguae latinae. This work is important for the history of grammatical thought: it returned to the principles of the Aristotelian doctrine of four causes and the Modistae thinking. His grammar focused on the primacy of spoken language, and it was one of the first to include a significant treatment of phonetics.
