• Microglia produce antioxidants, growth factors, and signals to astrocytes that can secrete neuroprotective factors. However, microglial activation induces cell death in the substantia nigra through increasing oxidative stress and through producing noxious compounds including proinflammatory cytokines. Astrocytes also produce various proinflammatory and neurotoxic factors. Both microglia and astrocytes may play dual roles in neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease.
