We have established and analyzed the sequences ofphase transitions in synthesis of layered compounds in the [A.sub.n][B.sub.n-1][O.sub.3n] family ([A.sup.II.sub.3][LnB.sup.V.sub.3].sub.3] ([A.sup.II] = Ba, Sr, Ln = La, Nd, [B.sup.V] = Nb, Ta) and [La.sub.4][Ti.sub.3][O.sub.12] with n = 4) from coprecipitated hydroxocarbonate and hydroxide systems, including steps involving the formation, solid-phase reaction, or structural rearrangement ofintermediates.
