The synthesis of highly crosslinked ultra-low density polyurethane shape memory foams based on various proportions of the symmetrical, low molecular weight branched hydroxyl monomers, N,N,N',N'-tetrakis (2-hydroxypropyl) ethylenediamine and 2,2',2"-nitrilotriethanol, with 1,6-diisocyanatohexane and a physical blowing agent is described. The products were characterised by core density, cell structure, solvent swelling and extraction, FTIR, DSC, DMTA, shape memory behaviour and volume expansion measurements and in-vitro biocompatibility studies and the results are discussed in terms of potential applications as smart biomaterials. 54 refs.
