In this paper I set out to explore the constraints and opportunities that inhibit or support teachers in their attempt to create successful literate students for the 21st century. My suggestions are drawn from the findings of a study that investigates teachers' personal and professional use of television, perhaps regarded as an 'old' technology. I argue that if teachers can learn to 'know themselves' (Britzman, 1994) as literate subjects then they will be in a better position to decide how they will engage with new and different literacies in their classroom practice.
