• Graphics applications in the defense industry have always represented the state of the art, and what used to be the province of mainframes only has now been practically applied to VAXes, stand-alone workstations, and microcomputers. Mission-critical information can now be put in the hands of crews who plan and carry out missions, because of the portability of the new stand-alone units. Workstations running graphics-based mission-planning software are now set up in the field. These systems, developed by McDonnell Douglas, access a number of databases, including the armed forces' World Databank 2. The systems use Omnicomp Graphics Corp's Omni 2000 GDS graphics display controllers.
