• This essay identifies seven sets of paradoxes in the First Tetralogy, attributed to Antiphon, that challenged accepted norms of legal proof and argument in 5th century Athens: 1) reflexive reversal paradoxes, 2) the paradoxical use of absence as a sign (sêmeia,), 3) paradoxes of wealth, 4) the paradoxical testimony of a dying slave, 5) paradoxes of premeditation, 6) a paradox of precedent, and 7) a paradox of pollution (miasma/ The essay also explores the use of eikos (probability) arguments in the First Tetralogy and their relationship to the enumerated paradoxes.
