Banks have witnessed excellent returns on credit cards in South and Southeast Asia, and are interested in achieving greater market penetration. Many are forced to offer promotional gifts and coupons to frequent users of the cards, but the costs are outweighed by high interest rates. Banks are averaging an 8% return on assets, double the figure in the US. Governments are reluctant to allow too much penetration, as it may decrease the high rate of saving in the region.
