• The K reactor at the federal government's Savannah River site in South Carolina is the only currently available source of the tritium used in US nuclear weapons. On Dec 13, 1991, Energy Secy James Watkins ordered the restart of the facility that has been shut down in recent years to correct safety problems, but between Dec 22 and 25, further testing released tritium-contaminated water in the Savannah River. The effects of the restart of the facility are discussed.
