A survey of nutrient intakes and food costs was conducted among households eligible to participate in the Food Stamp Program. Results revealed that 69% of these 4,408 households had food costs greater than 10% above the maximum allotment level, and 10% failed to provide the full 100% of RDAs for 11 key nutrients even when food costs were twice the allotment. In 627 households whose cost paralleled the allotment, for the 11 nutrients studied, 12% met the RDAs and 34% met only 80% of RDAs. The 34% met this level by purchasing more milk, eggs, dry legumes, vegetables, fruits and grain products, and less meat, poultry, fish, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages. (kbc)
