  • The present investigation attempted to evaluate the phytochemical constituents of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) Dewit using different micro-analysis, separation methods and spectral analysis. The preliminary phytochemical screening of Leucaena leucocephala showed that it contained steroids, terpinoids, coumarins, flavonoid +phenolics and glycosides and/or carbohydrates. Furthermore, the vegetative parts contained apigenin, apigenin-7-glucoside, apigenin-7-rutinoside, myricetin and umbelliferone, while apigenin, apigenin-7-glucoside, apigenin-7-rutinoside and umbelliferone were detected in the legumes. These compounds were identified using Rזּvalues, physical and chemical properties and confirmed by UV and 1H-NMR spectral data. In addition, different successive extracts of the vegetative parts and the legumes were practically achieved using hexane, petroleum ether (40-60°C), ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol 96% and 70% and water, respectively. The effect of these extracts against some pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms and fungal species was investigated using the disc-diffusion method. The ethyl alcohol extracts (70% and 96%) were the most effective extracts on all selected bacteria and fungi. This may be due to their contents of active compounds.
