- The development in recent years of genetic engineering and biotechnologies provides new approaches to improve the efficiency of breeding strategies. Molecular markers could be used to construct genetic maps consisting of ordering molecular markers across the genome. Such maps represent a framework, which enable the identification and localisation of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) for traits of agronomical interest with the final aim of achieving genetic improvement through marker-assisted selection (MAS). This new technology can select individual plants from the seedling stage without the expression of the phenotype. Molecular markers are essential tools in breeding for accumulation of several disease resistance genes in a single variety for more durable resistance. The MAS «pyramidalisation» of two leaf rust resistance genes, Lr9 and Lr24, is presented.
