  • The primary purpose of this research study was to examine and understand how women leaders thrive, survive, and negotiate their leadership role at higher education institutions in New Mexico when female leadership has not been the historical norm. By exploring this question, the aim was to gain a deeper understanding of the culture of leadership across New Mexico's higher education institutions, looking specifically at the career trajectories and experiences of women in executive leadership positions to provide perspective on situations that support the advancement of women to executive leadership positions. The overall goal was to better inform institutional leaders about diversity and equity issues that exist among top leadership positions, recognize any changes taking place in institutional leadership culture, and identify strategies to support women leaders and increase the advancement of women to leadership positions in response to the national experience of underrepresentation of women in higher education executive leadership. The attainment and appointment of women leaders in higher education executive leadership is significantly less than men (Gagliardi et al., 2017). This study explored social and cultural factors in the conceptualization of leadership qualities and characteristics that may contribute to barriers of more frequent attainment for women leaders. Additionally, this study explored the particular nuances of social and cultural contexts of leadership in New Mexico's higher education institutions. This phenomenological study, utilized interviews, document review and media review to better understand the experiences of women executive leaders in higher education in New Mexico. The findings demonstrated some common attributes and experiences across the participant interviews, with supporting information drawn from the media and document review. A set of primary and sub-themes were drawn from the data analysis. These themes and sub-themes included: 1) Intentionality in career trajectories; 1a) Variations on leadership pathways; 1b) Negotiating intentionality; 2) Developing leadership philosophies; 2a) Tricky situations; 2b) Developing personal leadership philosophy; 3) Navigating systemic barriers.
