Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • Despite a long history of art and exchange activities which go back to the prehistoric period, art business and the art market never received much attention until the last decade of the twenty century. Artworks, previously regarded as exclusively available to the rich, have become available to middle class people from all over the world. This is the result of a shift in perspective on art such that now, art is seen as having aesthetic and investment value. The art market has many unique attributes. For example, the value of artworks is not stable but may increase or decrease, in contrast to most consumption goods which decrease in value over time. Furthermore, the art market is dynamic and includes diverse business platforms, players, and regulations. In contrast to increasing interest in the art market and art business, compared to education in art history and arts administration, art business education is a relatively under-developed field of study. Not a single scholarly research article has been conducted purely on art business education. This thesis examines the role and status of art business education in the United States and Europe, and demonstrates the importance of education in art business and its potential to develop into a major academic field.
