  • Although the trauma that children experience in abusive situations differs from the trauma of a disaster, its effects are just as profound. The information and skills that caseworkers need to assess families and children who have been traumatized, to make more appropriate treatment planning decisions, and to carry out their professional roles with greater awareness of and sensitivity to the effects of trauma on children are presented in this manual. It is designed to accompany a one-day collaborative training session for caseworkers and foster care parents. During the post-traumatic stress period, safety and reassurance must be provided to the victims. This period can then lead to a process promoting remembrance and mourning, followed by the experience of reconnection and integration. Topics covered include: (1) Defining trauma; (2) Identifying trauma and the effects of psychic trauma; (3) The general effects of trauma on children; and (4) Building a case plan and understanding the treatment of trauma. The training plan includes specific learning objectives and uses exercises, video, and role play to prepare caseworkers and foster parents to help children to recover from trauma and create a future. Resource lists include materials cited and a list of children's stories. An evaluation form is included. (EMK)
