Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • This book is both a personal memoir of the author and a history of adult education in Western Canada during the first half of the twentieth century. The memoirs cover Robert England's three years as a teacher of Slawa Rural School (1920-23) in northern Saskatchewan; his cooperation with the Masonic Memorial Scholarship Scheme for fifty teachers in rural non-English-speaking districts (1921-24); his work as Continental Superintendent, Colonization Department, C.N.R. Europe (1924-49); as Western Manager, Colonization-Agriculture, C.N.R. Western Region (1930-36) and the Community Progress Competitions project; adult education activities continued as first Director of Extension, The University of British Columbia (1936-37), and as first Director of the Canadian Legion Educational Services Overseas in 1940; followed by his account of re-establishment in civil life of World War II veterans when he was executive secretary of the Interdepartmental General Advisory Committee on Rehabilitation and Demobilization (1940-43); and his chairmanship of the Committee on University Requirements (1945-46). He deals with his reorganization of the Nationalities Branch into the Citizenship Division in 1944 and the plan for Canadian Citizenship Act. The author profiles his friends and collaborators. The author's curriculum vitae, a bibliography, and an index are included. (KC)
