Designed to provide statistical information on the socioeconomic status of Montana American Indians and to document the extent of their participation in government service programs, this statistical handbook is based on data derived from the 1970 U.S. Census, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Indian Health Service (150 state and Federal agencies in 50 states were surveyed and visits were made to government offices in Denver and Washington, D.C.). Data are presented in a format which documents each source and clearly identifies the method of data acquisition to facilitate direct follow-up. Since these statistics can be used to support grant applications, assess the need for services, indicate and investigate service problems, and allocate resources, the tables have been arranged so interracial comparison can be facilitated. Statistics are presented for the general areas of: population; health and vital statistics; employment; income; welfare and insurance; education; housing; law and justice; land, agriculture, and development. Additionally, this document includes: an introduction; a section on how to use the profile; a list of sources used in the compilation of each table; a guide to publications; and an index. (JC)
