  • The deformation mechanism in the micro machining of soft metal tin significantly influences its machined surface quality. In this work, microscratching tests along different orientations are performed on the tin surface. Activation of slip systems induces the appearance of surface slip band, lattice rotation and stable cutting force. The crucial role of loading orientation in slip system activation and lattice rotation is investigated. The misorientation around 62° is detected in the region of the activated slip band, whereas the misorientation angle of the other deformation region is less than 15°. In addition, a part of the lattice rotation would be recovered to original orientation along with time. [Display omitted] •Different activated slip systems are observed within different grains.•When the Schmid factor is large enough, the slip system is activated.•Slip systems encompass slip lines, lattice rotation and variations in cutting force.•The form of lattice rotation is analyzed and will disappear with time.•The magnitude of lattice rotation affects the cutting force.
