  • Sustainable production is particularly effective if it includes closed material loops. Considering the system boundary of urban areas and aiming to enable sustainable urban production, these loops must therefore be closed within these areas. To achieve this, it is necessary to determine and understand the material flows within cities and to evaluate whether their circulation can be reasonably implemented. Material loops can be categorized into reuse, reprocess and recycling loops: While in a reuse loop the product remains unchanged or marginal changed and is restored to functionality, in a reprocess loop the product is recovered on component level and in a recycle loop transformed into secondary raw materials for further reuse. While all loops focus on processes to maintain the material flow, there exist different approaches. A varying production depth must be utilized, which results in different utilization potentials. To develop concepts and assess their viability for the implementation in urban areas, this paper delivers a framework of the loops and their interconnection. The construct of closed material loops in urban production is approached by means of a framework that attempts to describe, adapt and develop viable closed systems in a city.
