We propose a design of two-mode erbium doped fiber amplifier (2M-EDFA980 nm; 1480 nm) for mode-division multiplexed based wave division multiplexed (MDM-WDM) hybrid system. 2M-EDFA980 nm; 1480 nm systems are proposed that are characterized by both low gain and low noise excursion. Implementation of novel matrix branching method with simultaneous EDFA multi-parameter optimization technique, results in 2M-EDFA980 nm; 1480 nm systems producing a gain exceeding 24 dB for each of the 16 channels in both modes. The gain excursion and noise figure excursion for 2M-EDFA980 nm are 1.40 dB and 0.54 dB respectively. In comparison, for 2M-EDFA1480 nm the corresponding values are 0.95 dB and 0.59 dB respectively. 2M-EDFA1480 nm gives improved performance over 2M-EDFA980 nm due to the high population inversion maintained by 1480 nm.
