  • Following the brilliant results of the ARGO-YBJ experiment (Tibet, 4300 m asl), this paper intends to investigate how to optimize the potential of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) for detecting cosmic-ray showers. This requires improving parameters like construction simplicity, low cost, and working reliability in hostile environments, rather than high-rate capability and time resolution as required in collider experiments. RPCs are particularly suitable for the detection of very low energy showers, as shown by ARGO-YBJ. An example of RPC detector, conceived for cosmic-ray physics and gamma-ray astronomy, particularly Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) observation, will be shown. This is of great interest in view of a large-size cosmic-shower detector to be installed in the Southern hemisphere.
