This study intended to synthesize and characterize nano silver sodium fluoride (NSSF) and to assess the effect of this formulation on artificially demineralized root dentine lesions compared with Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and Sodium Fluoride (NaF).
To prepare the NSSF, 0.3gms of chitosan (CH) was used to prepare 0.5wt % solution. Specimens were prepared at buccal or lingual aspects of the roots and divided in 4 groups of Control, NSSF, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and sodium fluoride (NaF). They were characterized using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, surface, and cross-sectional microhardness and nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
SEM revealed partial occlusion of dentinal tubules with NSSF, whilst the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) showed low concentration of silver and fluoride. Increment in the microhardness was noted on the surface and from 25 to 100µm. FTIR-ATR spectroscopy also revealed higher mineral to matrix and carbonate content. Silver nanoparticles with sodium fluoride can be successfully synthesized and characterized
The results suggest that NSSSF could possibly be used for arresting the progression of cavitated root dentine lesions
