Supporting Faculty Scholarship through a Peer Writing Group: A Model and Guide for Success

The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the outcomes of the Pawprints writing group. We asked two main questions: (1) What are the impacts, if any, of the Pawprints writing group on scholar productivity? and (2) What makes Pawprints scholars a successful and satisfying experience for those involved?
We used a collaborative auto ethnographic approach with a convergent mixed methods design to describe the supports and barriers of a writing support group.

Academic artifacts were calculated from CVs of core group members (n = 8) to assess productivity. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with some of the core group members as well as newer members (n = 9).

Core members were significantly more productive during the first five years of Pawprints than in the preceding five-year period (63 peer-reviewed publications vs. 29; t=2.982, p<.01; Figure 1). We identified 3 themes within the interviews: Professional Growth, Intentional Organization, and External Factors that Impact Outcomes. These themes reflect the personal, group, and community features that lead to success and satisfaction with the Pawprints scholars’ experience.
Pawprints was valued by all group members who participated and led to increased productivity. There were difficulties and barriers encountered over the past five years; however, the group structure allowed members to be nimble and adjust accordingly. Mutual accountability was a strong thread throughout the qualitative themes. Pawprints demonstrates that a long-term, cohesive, and sustainable writing group is feasible and increases faculty productivity and scholarship.
