This chapter discusses Kikuchi's disease, which was first reported in 1972. Many cases have been reported in many parts of Japan and recently some reports of this lesion appeared in Europe, the United States, and Asia. Antigens against HHV-6 were detected in 17 of the 19 patients with Kikuchi's disease. The antigen-positive cells were more frequently encountered in Kikuchi's disease than in other reactive lymphadenopathies and malignant lymphoma. Frequent appearances and membranous distribution of the antigen suggest some role of HHV-6 in the activation or extension of Kikuchi's disease. Kikuchi's disease represents distinctive histological features, such as proliferation of transformed lymphocytes including considerable numbers of immunoblasts, histiocytes, and nuclear debris, with necrobiotic or necrotic foci in the affected areas usually in the paracortex. The chapter also presents a table showing HHV-6 antigen in lymph nodes of Kikuchi's disease.
