• The nutrients present in various foods play an important role in maintaining the normal functions of the human body. The main nutrients present in food include carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals. In addition, there are some biologically active food ingredients called “phytonutrients,” which play an important role in human health. They have a great impact on the healthcare system and can provide medical benefits for health, including the prevention and/or treatment of diseases and various physical disorders. Phytonutrients play an active role in maintaining and regulating immune function to prevent specific diseases. As natural products, they have great prospects in clinical treatment because they do not have the side effects commonly associated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. They are also relatively inexpensive, greatly reducing the cost of health care. Phytonutrients are phytonutrients with specific biological activities that support human health. Some important biologically active phytonutrients include polyphenols, terpenoids, resveratrol, flavonoids, isoflavones, carotenoids, limonin, glucosinolates, phytoestrogens, phytosterols, anthocyanins, Omega 3 fatty acids, and probiotics. They have specific pharmacological effects on human health, such as antibacterial, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antiallergic, antispasmodic, anticancer, antiaging, liver protection, lipid-lowering, neuroprotective, blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, stimulant central nervous system, analgesic, prevention of carcinogenic effects induced by UVB, immunomodulators, and wind repellants. This small review attempts to summarize the main important types of phytonutrients and their role in promoting human health and as therapeutic agents, as well as current market and marketing trends.
